Simple status response for devices

Ok
Excellent stuff going on with Alexa integration but I know I read a post regarding getting homeSeer device status from Alexa and I think it was NOT possible but I see many released skills that do nothing more than get information (status) from other servers like weather.

I would like to know how to simply get the status of a device (on, off temp motion etc...)
not necessarily set the device's status

Can it be done ? with the Skill or with the API

Alexa, ask the house to get the status of the {device}
