Speaker client always responds with "The status of Lower Storage Lights is Off"

I couldn't find a Speaker client forum so I'm posting here.

I'm playing with voice recognition with the Speaker client. I can get events to fire and lights to turn on and off but no matter what I invoke the Speaker client always responds with "The status of Lower Storage Lights is Off" and then performs the action I actually asked for.

Does anyone know what might be going on here? The only odd part of my setup is that I am using Jon00's Alexa/Echo helper script which deals with voice recognition as well. Could that be interfering? Any other ideas?
